SampleScience has made the RC909 Pro completely free through 31 October 2024. No trial, no watermark, no feature gating the full £39 plugin, yours for the price of a newsletter sign-up.

I spent a weekend putting it through its paces in Ableton Live 12 on an M2 MacBook Air. Here's the full breakdown.

The ice cream shop that makes money when it's cold

28 Wishes sells ice cream in Los Angeles. Below 70°F, sales fall about 20%. So the owners put about $20 a day into Kalshi weather markets, taking the cold side. The days that keep customers away now pay something back. See how other owners are doing it

What you get

The RC909 Pro is a sample-based ROMpler focused on the Roland TR-909, but it's not a circuit-modelled recreation like Roland Cloud or a deep-synthesis engine like Drumazon 2. It's a curated library of 909 samples…. kicks, snares, hats, claps, rims, crashes, rides… mapped across a playable interface with per-voice processing.

Core specs:

  • 1,200+ samples (24-bit/44.1 kHz WAV)

  • 11 instrument voices, each with independent ADSR, filter, pitch, pan, volume

  • Master section: soft clipper, compressor, EQ, reverb, delay

  • MIDI learn, multi-out routing (11 stereo pairs), drag-and-drop WAV export

  • VST3, AU, AAX — Windows 10+ and macOS 10.13+ (Apple Silicon native)

  • 1.2 GB installed

The free version is identical to the paid build. You get the same installer, same authorisation (none required after the initial email gate), same updates.

How it sounds and where it sits

I loaded the factory "909 Kit" preset and A/B'd against my go-to: D16 Drumazon 2 (£99) and the stock Ableton 909 Core Kit (free with Live Suite).

The RC909 Pro sits in a sweet spot: better than stock ROMplers, lighter than synthesis engines, faster than loading one-shots into a sampler. The kicks have that classic 909 click without needing a transient shaper. The closed hats don't "machine-gun" at high velocities the round-robin works.

But: you can't tune the kick pitch independently of the sample playback speed. No FM-style tone shaping. No per-voice saturation types just the master soft clipper. If you need to design a 909 from scratch, this isn't the tool.

Workflow: the good, the annoying, the timesaver

Good

  • Drag-and-drop WAV export from each voice. Click the waveform icon, drop onto an audio track. Instant stem rendering without soloing/bouncing.

  • Multi-out defaults to stereo pairs (Kick, Snare, CH, OH, Rim, Clap, Crash, Ride, Tom L/M/H, Perc). Works instantly in Live's mixer — no routing setup.

  • MIDI learn works on every knob. Mapped my LaunchControl XL in 30 seconds.

  • Preset browser is tag-based (Genre, Mood, Era). "Acid," "Warehouse," "90s Rave" actually return useful starting points.

Annoying

  • No search by note/key. The kick samples aren't labelled with root pitch. I had to load into Sampler to check — they're all C1, which is fine but undocumented.

  • Master compressor has no ratio display. Just "Low/Med/High" buttons. Ear-trustworthy, but imprecise.

  • No global tune knob. Pitch is per-voice only. Shifting the whole kit down a semitone means 11 clicks.

Timesaver

The "Humanise" button (top right) applies subtle per-voice velocity and timing offsets. It's not a groove template — it's a one-click "make this sound less programmed" toggle. I left it on for 90% of patterns.

Who this is for and who should skip

How to try it today (takes 3 minutes)

  1. Enter email → confirm → download link arrives instantly

  2. Run installer (Windows: .exe, Mac: .pkg)

  3. Open DAW → scan plugins → load SampleScience RC909 Pro

  4. No serial, no iLok, no account login after install

Pro tip: The installer places samples in /Library/Application Support/SampleScience/RC909 Pro/Samples (Mac) or C:\ProgramData\SampleScience\RC909 Pro\Samples (Windows). Point your favourite sampler there if you want the raw WAVs without the plugin.

Final thoughts

At £0, the RC909 Pro is a no-brainer. At £39, it's a solid "buy if you hate programming drums" utility. The free window removes the calculation entirely.

My only real gripe: the lack of pitch metadata on the kick samples. It's a minor QA miss that SampleScience could fix in a point release. Everything else — sound quality, CPU, routing, export — works as advertised.

If you produce electronic music and don't already own a 909 plugin you love, download it before 31 October. Worst case: you delete 1.2 GB. Best case: you've got a reliable, great-sounding 909 that stays out of your way.
